Contract Description:
The goal of annual beach seining and PIT tagging activities in Hells Canyon on the Snake River is to tag natural-origin fall Chinook salmon. However, there is always a possibility that a small portion of the sampled population contains subyearling spring/summer Chinook salmon that washout from upstream tributaries that could bias subsequent inferences about the population. Because of this, we collect weekly genetic samples from a subsample of the fish that are collected and tagged to determine whether they are fall-run or spring-run. These percentages can then be used to more accurately predict the abundance of natural-origin fall Chinook salmon that emigrate from Hells Canyon and pass Lower Granite Dam each year. These abundance estimates are used in ongoing life-cycle modeling efforts. Work conducted under this contract will analyze a back-log of samples collected from 2009 to 2018.
